Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry was first established in 1928 and re-established in 1979. In recent years, under the support of Project 211 and Project 985, our department has gained long-term development with the spirit of “keeping pace with the times” and the school running characteristics of “base in Shanghai, serving the country with a global vision”.

At present, we have two doctorate programs (Applied Chemistry and Polymeric Chemistry and Physics) and four master programs (Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry).

The Department of Chemistry has four teaching and research sections (Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and University Chemistry) and the Basic Chemistry Experiment Center. Our experiment building, with an area of 11,514 m², and instruments worth more than RMB25 million, provides excellent experiment conditions and bases for teaching and science research. Except for undergraduate education, we also undertake the teaching of Basic Chemistry and Experiments of closely-related majors and University Chemistry and Experiments of remotely-related majors. The four basic chemistry courses, University Chemistry and Experimental Chemistry, are all top-level courses of SJTU, especially University Chemistry and Experimental Chemistry, which separately won the title of Shanghai Quality Course in 2003 and 2004.

Focusing on basic research, the Department of Chemistry integrates scientific research with the national economy, especially the mainstay industry, to serve society. It has been responsible for many national key projects, natural science fund projects, national Project 863 and Project 973, Shanghai spark program projects, industrial projects and enterprise commissioned projects, obtaining outstanding achievements.

The research interests include new chiral nano-mesoporous material, nanomaterial and organic-inorganic nanocomposite material, coordination chemistry and supermolecular chemistry, capillary electrophoresis and microfluidic chip analysis, environmental analytical chemistry, relativistic effects in chemical bond and density functional theory, radical fluorination chemistry, general molecular force field model, enzyme inhibitor pharmacology and computer assisted design, high-efficiency asymmetrical catalysis, metallic-organic chemistry, drug-organic chemistry, dye chemistry and photoelectrical functional material.

First-class faculty, active academic thoughts, advanced experimental methods and devices help our department to gain outstanding scientific achievements, improving the scientific level and expanding international engagement. Recent years have witnessed an increasing number of scientific and educational cooperation between the department and universities in the US, Canada, Japan, Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands and the growing influence and reputation at home and abroad.
